Canada bans import of Russian aluminium & steel

Canada has adopted bans on the import of all Russian aluminium products, including unwrought aluminium, aluminium sheets and finished products, as well as primary Russian steel products, such as iron and non-alloy steel, and semi-finished and finished products such as tubes and pipes. These trade sanctions follow a package of Russia sanctions adopted alongside the other members of the G7 to mark the 1-year anniversary of Russia’s actions in Ukraine on 24 February. Press Release, Regulations & Regulations. The Canadian measures included:

  • The designation of 129 people and 63 entities. The listed people included senior managers in Russia’s leading defence companies, senior officials in the Russian government facilitating Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, a Russian “oligarch” and the family members of already sanctioned people. The listed entities included decision-making and implementing institutions involved in Russia’s aggression, as well as private and state-owned enterprises in Russia’s defence industry.
  • Export bans on certain chemical elements for use in electronics.
  • Bans on the import, purchase or acquisition of Russian arms, ammunition, and other weapons, wherever situated or processed, from Russia or from any person in Russia.
