US eases Cyprus arms embargo

The US Department of State has announced the lifting of restrictions on the export, re-export and transfer of defence articles to Cyprus for FY 2023 after the country met the necessary conditions of cooperation under the Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Partnership Act 2019 and the National Defence Authorisation Act FY 2020. The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) will be amended to reflect the new policy, effective 1 October 2022. Cyprus’ compliance with the legislation will be reviewed annually.

An arms embargo was imposed on Cyprus in 1987 and was partially lifted in September 2020.
