US sanctions Iranian intelligence operatives over abduction plot

Senior Iranian intelligence official Alireza Shahvaroghi Farahani and intelligence operatives Mahmoud Khazein, Kiya Sadeghi and Omid Noori have been sanctioned by the US pursuant to Executive Order 13553 for having acted for/on behalf of the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security. The 4 are said to have been involved in planned kidnap of a US-based, Iranian-American journalist and activist who had been critical of the Iranian government. In July 2021, Mr Farahani, Mr Khazein, Mr Sadeghi and Mr Noori were indicted in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York for conspiracy related to kidnapping, sanctions violations, bank and wire fraud, and money laundering in connection with the plot.
