Russia imposes travel ban on 8 senior EU officials

The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that 8 EU officials have been banned from entering Russian territory under Federal Law No. 114-FZ “On the Entry to and Exit from the Russian Federation” of August 15, 1996. Those listed include David Sassoli (the President of the European Parliament), V?ra Jourová (European Commission Vice President), and 6 officials from Germany, France, Estonia, Sweden, and Latvia. The measures come in response to the EU’s sanctions imposed on 2 and 22 march targeting 6 Russian nationals in total for the imprisonment of Alexei Navalny, and human rights abuses against LGBTI people in Chechnya (see post and post).

The EU has issued a Declaration condemning the decision, which states that Russia’s measures will “not deter the European Union from continuing to stand up for human rights, democracy and international law, nor from holding those responsible for violations and abuses of human rights to account”.
