US sanctions Russians for interference in 2018 elections

The US has imposed its first set of sanctions under the 2018 Executive Order targeting foreign interference in US elections (see post). The designations target 4 entities, 7 people, 3 aircraft and a yacht, all of which are linked to the Internet Research Agency and its financier Yevgeniy Prigozhin, who was originally designated in December 2016 (see post). The Internet Research Agency is said to have “used fictitious personas on social media and disseminated false information in an effort to attempt to influence the 2018 U.S. midterm elections”. OFAC has imposed sanctions or amended the designations of 6 of the agency’s members under the same E.O.: Dzheykhun Nasimi Ogly Aslanov; Mikhail Leonidovich Burchik; Vadim Vladimirovich Podkopaev; Vladimir Dmitriyevich Venkov; Igor Vladimirovich Nesterov; and Denis Igorevich Kuzmin.

In order to “increase[e] pressure” against Mr Prigozhin, property including the aircraft M-SAAN; RA-02791; and VP-CSP, and his yacht, St Vitamin, have now been identified and blocked, whilst 3 “front companies [that] manage his luxury personal property” have been added to OFAC’s SDN list. The companies are: Autolex Transport Ltd; Beratex Group Ltd; and Linburg Industries Ltd. OFAC Notice and Press Release.
