Gibraltar and UK seize supertanker suspected of carrying oil to Syria

On 4 July, Gibraltar Port and Law Enforcement agencies, assisted by the British Royal Marines, seized a supertanker, Grace 1, to the east of Gibraltar today. The vessel is suspected of breaching EU sanctions by carrying crude oil to the Banyas refinery in Syria.

Fabian Picardo, Chief Minister of Gibraltar, said that the refinery “is the property of an entity that is subject to EU sanctions against Syria”, providing a basis for the detention of the vehicle. Ship brokers and tank tracking data indicate that the tanker is from Iran. See Notice of the detention and applicable Regulations.
