US adds Harakat al-Nujaba and its leader to terrorism sanctions

The US Department of State has designated Harakat al-Nujaba (HAN) and its leader, Akram ‘Abbas al-Kabi (Iraqi national), as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, pursuant to Executive Order (EO) 13224 (US asset freeze). According to the Press Release, HAN is an “Iran-backed Iraqi militia funded by but not under the control of the Iraqi government”. Al-Kabi was designated in 2008 under the US’s Iraq sanctions (EO 13438). See OFAC Notice.
