US man sentenced to 32 months for sanctions violations

Amin al-Baroudi, a Syrian-born US citizen, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for violating US sanctions on Syria. Mr Baroudi pleaded guilty to the violations in January; between December 2011 and March 2013 he and several co-conspirators exported US equipment to Syria for the purpose of supplying rebel groups, who intended to overthrow the Assad government and install an Islamic state. At least one of the groups supplied by Baroudi is said to fight alongside Jabhat al-Nusrah, a group designated by the US State Department as a foreign terrorist organisation and which operates as al-Qaeda’s official branch in Syria.
