UN signals new sanctions on North Korea

The UN Security Council today strongly condemned a claimed hydrogen bomb test conducted today by North Korea, which UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described as “profoundly destabilising” and a “grave contravention of the international norm against nuclear testing”. The Security Council said the nuclear test was a violation of resolutions imposing sanctions on North Korea in response to its nuclear programme, and of the UN’s anti-proliferation regime, and repeated its determination to take “further significant measures” in the event of another nuclear test. The Security Council said it would begin work on a resolution imposing new sanctions on North Korea. UN press release here.
